Ben's Monolog
Qetuo.me and The Computer Repair Podcast is now listed on the Bookmarks4Techs Blog (http://bookmarks4techs.blogspot.com/2010/08/site-update-25.html)

A neighbor gave Ben 2 Dell dimension 3000 computers, P4 at 2.8ghz, 2gb of ram, 80gb HDD both the same specs, and a nice Compaq Presario SR1920NX, which is a AMD Athlon 64 2.2 Ghz, 1.5GB ram, and 200GB HDD. The dells had a many of spyware on them, and the Compaq had AV 2010 in which the previous owner had tried to remove it with Norton AS 2010 with no eval.

Also a working HP Deskjet D2660 the only thing that was wrong with it was the power button was pushed into the case.

Ben's weeklong windows 7 experience and the media center he is building with the Compaq he talked about earlier.

Ben has an update for one of the listeners of The Computer Repair Podcast "Mark (MeClaudius)"
He asked "I am trying to find a separate PDF reader which displays two consecutive pages at a time side by side just as you would read a magazine."
Well I found one called FoxIt Reader, In the show notes there is a image show how to view a PDF in Magazine style.
Click here to see the image on how its done (http://www.qetuo.me/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/foxitreader.jpg)

Windows 7 SP1 RTM in Q1 2011
For those of you out there who Service packs, you will be happy to know that Microsoft has already confirmed "Officially" that the first service pack for Windows 7 will only be made available to customers worldwide in the first half of 2011.
Also according to Microsoft, the Windows 7 Minimum System Requirements involve: “1 GHz or faster 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor; 1 GB of RAM (32-bit) / 2 GB RAM (64-bit); 16 GB available disk space (32-bit) / 20 GB (64-bit); DirectX 9 graphics processor with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver; DVD-compatible drive and Internet access.”

Dell Browser (http://www.kace.com/products/freetools/secure-browser/)
Dell recently-acquired KACE Networks and has just released a new Web browser called "Secure Browser". You might be asking why? well its essentially a sandboxed version of Firefox 3.6, with Flash and Reader plug-ins... Yes I'm not kidding its a blowed version of FireFox! Check out the link in the show notes for further stuff on the DELL browser
Note: Dell's Secure Browser really is Firefox, with a secure wrapper. You have to uninstall the current version of Firefox to get it to work. from the looks of it, it is designed to be installed as the default browser on a new/old/home built/crappy/junk computer.
------

Adobe Show Off Protected Mode for Reader (http://blogs.adobe.com/asset/2010/07/%20introducing-adobe-reader-protected-mode.html)
Adobe have announced that Reader will run in a sandbox called Protected Mode l. It is based on Microsoft's Practical Windows Sandboxing that is similar to the Google Chrome sandbox and Microsoft Office 2010 Protected Viewing Mode. This is good news as it will drastically reduce the attacks and vulnerabilities that Adobe Reader users have been fed up with for years. Now Adobe needs to work on the security problems with Flash

Dell Server Motherboard Malware (http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/servers/f/956/t/19339458.aspx)
Dell's PowerEdge R410 replacement motherboards some how contains malware with in the firmware.
The issue is not present on new servers and does not impact non-Windows based servers (IE Linux/Unix). Dell is sending snail mail (yeah I know its but its Dell) and also calling affected customers. If you want more info on this problem the link is in the show notes.
------

Just in time a new DNS Service (ROLLING EYES!)
Well I have to say you cant all we need now is for Apple and Microsoft to start getting in the the DNS biz. This time Sunbelt Softwar (http://www.sunbeltsoftware.com/)e the guys who make VIPRE Antivirus have now come up with a new DNS service called ClearCloud (http://forums.clearclouddns.com/messageview.aspx?catid=247&threadid=5147&enterthread=y). that does about the same thing as... well the rest of them.
If you want to try it out the Ip addresses are 74.118.212.1 and 74.118.212.2.

I have a question I want to put out to the computer repair podcast community, is there a way to tunnel thru multiple DNS services? It might be a cool thing to do.
Let me know @ feedback@qetuo.me (mailto:feedback@qetuo.me)

OpenDNS FamilyShield
On the last show, I was talking about NortonDNS and Google DNS, well last week OpenDNS which allows you to control what websites you can access, has launched a new service called OpenDNS FamilyShield. Lenovo Support Website Infects Visitors with Trojan
PC manufacturer Lenovo had its support website attacked when some hackers infected the site with a rogue IFrame.
The download.lenovo.com subdomain was blacklisted by Google when the attack was occurring so Firefox or Google Chrome browsers would display a warning when the site was visited. After searching for an update about this attack and visiting the Lenovo support site on my own computer.
FYI: The Lenovo website is now safe to visit.

Tech Tip
This episode is not a tip, but a tool called NoVirusThanks Malware Remover v2.7.0 (http://www.novirusthanks.org/products/novirusthanks-malware-remover/)

Tech Talk
What to do with that old tech after upgrading a computer.
I'm a pack rat when it comes to computer parts and almost never though a part out because of its usefulness later down the road. Old parts can be a revenue stream just look at the sellers on ebay and craigslist.

I received an email last week from Mark that asked what are my policies on using “used parts” for customer repairs. So my policy as fair as telling people that a part is used or not... its hit or miss. Laptop Motherboards are one thing I don't let people know there used, because of the price. I don't think someone wants to pay around $400 dollars for a new Laptop MB from the manufacture, when you can pick up a used one for around $100 dollars on ebay.
Also I don't tell them about used ram. I've found that new sticks of older types of ram like pc100, 133, and DDR you buy on ebay fail at a higher rate than the ones being pulled from computers that have been running for a while. But if your selling a part on ebay you must disclose if it is used or not. Its all about the feedback rating baby.
Selling old hard drives and broken ones are one good way to make some extra cash. Those old and broken HD's offer good parts to those offer data recovery services and are always looking for HD's that can be used to help there own customers.

Now I'm not saying you have to sell everything! You can also put the old tech to good use.

Tech Talk
What to Charge for support, repairs and parts!

When researching the cost of supporting people, I noticed alot of things, And with those things three jumped out, 1. Bad websites which I'm not going to disguises at this time now, 2. They do not offer any price list on any of there services, and 3. The ones that did I thought where way to pricey for even my league. and why I say pricey I mean $200-$300 pricey.
Since its hard to determine what to charge your customers I have linked up a Salary report showing what computer repair techs are making a year depending on years of experience.
Salary Survey for Computer Repair Technicians (http://www.payscale.com/research/US/Job=Computer_Repair_Technician/Salary)
Note: Those figures are for what employees of tech companies are getting payed, and not the sole proprietor like you, and hell it may not even help you what so ever, but its linked up anyway.

But really in order to determine the amount you need to charge, you need to take into account for a few things,

	* Your house hold bills
	* Rent If you have a shop
	* Insurance (for you and your shop if you have one)
	* Nest egg for parts, and car repair
	* Marketing materials (adwords, news paper, signs, etc)
	* Materials (Paper, Printer, Toner/Ink, Etc)
	* Taxes

Software Updates for the week
Right Now I'm Trying to setup a VM with all the needed software a tech uses
So as of this recording it isn't done... well I'm kinda lazy to but I'll get to it by the next show.
If you have any software you want me to check up on shoot me an email @ feedback@qetuo.me

Tech Tool of the Week
Although this isn't a tech tool is a fix You might also Why A fix? Well Due to McAfee massing up computers due to there antivirus product, giving a false positive.
So I wanted to Tell you how to fix it.
Your going to need a Windows CD thats able to boot into the recovery console. Once in the recovery console, you would type the following commands in the console prompt and then press Enter on your keyboard.
copy \windows\system32\dllcache\svchost.exe \windows\system32

Once you type that command and press Enter, you should see that 1 file has been copied. You can then type Exit and press Enter to reboot your computer. Now that the C:\Windows\System32\svchost.exe file has been restored, your computer should boot up properly
FYI I provided a link to McAfee's Website. McAfee is paying back Customers of there antivirus product for the full price of the fix, let you customers know this, and save them money.

Tech Talk
This show I'm going to talk about Websites and Brick and moodier stores that all techs should use for buying there products for there biz or there customers
Ebay (http://www.ebay.com/) Good for laptop parts
Craigslist (http://www.craigslist.com/) Like eBay, Craigslist is a good place to searh your area for parts, of a laptop or missing/broken part on a tower.
Deal extreme (http://www.dealextreme.com/) Good for things a tech my have on hand or in there shop.
MonoPrice.com (http://www.monoprice.com/) always a good place to buy cables, but not only that monoprice also sells wall brackets for LCD screens
Amazon.com (http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2F&tag=how2podcastco-20&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=390957) Everyone knows about amazon.com, what you might not know is they have newsletter that tells you about some great deals on products
Harbor Freight - A great place to find cheap tools to work on computers with
Any Dollar store - this is a great place to find tools that some techs may over look, I found an LED booklight that works great when your working inside a computer case.
Micro Center (http://www.microcenter.com/) - This store is the ultimate place to find new parts at a great price.
Frys Electronics (http://www.frys.com/) - Not my fav but it is a geek haven, if micro center doesn't have it Frys will
Compusa AKA Tiger Direct - Over the years CU and TD used to be the place to goto for parts,</itunes:summary>

Show Notes:
Unlike PC's, Mac's have a very different Kind of bios called a Extensible Firmware Interface or EFI for short. This is a set of interfaces that defines how software will interface with future firmware. Intel developed EFI as a part of the Intel Boot Initiative program that began in 1998. This program was designed to modernize firmware technology in today's computers in order to move past the limitations of a legacy BIOS. It offers features similar to the Open Firmware used on older PowerPC-based Macs. Beyond that, it is extensible and quite flexible.
You might be asking your self why did I need to know all that stuff? The reason is that the computer needs to be told what to do whan you turn it on when it comes to booting to different peripherals

Here’s a list of system startup hot keys to press while Mac OS X is booting, and their various effects:

Pressing C when Booting, boots a CD or DVD like a Mac OS X disc
Pressing T Boots in Target Disk mode, this allows you to boot off a external Hard Drive but only works with FireWire.
Pressing N Boots from an attached network server or better known as a NetBoot server
Pressing X Attempts to force Mac OS X to boot, if non-Mac OS X startup volumes are present.
Pressing Shift Boots the mac into ‘Safe Mode’ which has limited functionality
Pressing Option Displays all bootable volumes kinda like a Startup Manager which is good for multiple versions of OSX .
Pressing Command+V Boots into Verbose mode, These may be used for troubleshooting or software development.
Pressing Command+S Boots in Single user mode if you used the Command+V

Its kinda strange how the mac hardware is different from the pc world, but thats why we choose the mac
